New McGivney Award Requirement

In addition to the current requirements, councils will now be required to host or participate in at least 4 First Degree Ceremonies. The reporting to Supreme is done on Form 450 by the District Deputy. The entire McGivney Award requirements are explained on the Awards page.

Automated Honorary/Honorary Life awards

The Supreme Council office has automated the processing of Honorary/Honorary Life awards and the issuing of the appropriate cards for council/assembly members. This change includes the new Fourth Degree Honorary distinction. With this, notification to the Supreme Council office requesting these updates is no longer needed. After the initial run, the cards will be sent to FSs/FCs weekly for presentation at a suitable occasion.

Honorary Membership Dues Change

At the 2010 Supreme Convention delegates voted to change the Supreme Council By-Laws to have the amount an Honorary member (Council) can be assessed from an annual amount of 10.00 to “the sum of State and Supreme Council per capita charges and levies."

New IRS Requirement - http://epostcard.form990.org
  • Under the Pension Protection Act of 2006, most small tax-exempt organizations whose gross receipts are normally $25,000 or less must now file Form 990-N, Electronic Notice (e-Postcard) for Tax-Exempt Organizations if they were not required to file Form 990 or 990-EZ.
  • Before this law was enacted, these small organizations were not required to file annually with the IRS. The first filings are due in 2008 for tax years ending on or after December 31, 2007.
  • The first e-Postcards are due in 2008 for tax years ending on or after December 31, 2007. The e-Postcard is due every year by the 15th day of the 5th month after the close of your tax year. For example, if your tax year ended on December 31, 2007, the e-Postcard is due May 15, 2008. You cannot file the e-Postcard until after your tax year ends.
  • If you do not file your e-Postcard on time, the IRS will send you a reminder notice but you will not be assessed a penalty for late filing the e-Postcard. However, any organization that fails to file the required e-Postcards (or information returns – Forms 990 or 990-EZ) for three consecutive years will automatically lose its tax-exempt status. The revocation of the organization’s tax-exempt status will not take place until the filing due date of the third year.
